A 19-year-old man presented to our emergency department with abdominal pain and jaundice. He had emigrated from Senegal during infancy. He was found to be a carrier of hepatitis B virus, with a hepatitis B surface antigen serum DNA concentration persistently below 2000 IU/mL. He was negative for hepatitis B e antigen and positive for anti-hepatitis B e antibodies.
