[Correspondence] New World, old views

Bill Bynum and Helen Bynum's Perspective (July 14, p 112)1 about cranium trepanation by the Inca perpetuates stereotypes about the history of medicine in the Americas. They conclude that the Spanish conquistadors were dismissive of medicine and indigenous customs. The Americas have a rich pre-Columbian medical history, but also a post-Columbian one, and both must be judged by scientific standards instead of prejudice.
