Asthma is a heterogeneous disorder with significant resistance to treatment. Because of this, there has been much effort into elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying the different subtypes of asthma and determination of biomarkers for the development of more targeted therapeutic strategies. In this study Bigler et al. (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2016; http://ift.tt/2oHMlPS) performed genome-wide transcript profiling in whole-blood samples of asthmatic patients and control subjects by using samples collected from the Unbiased Biomarkers in Prediction of Respiratory Disease Outcomes (U-BIOPRED) trial.
