Immune response plays a major role in the development of tumors, with complex and dynamic interactions taking place between malignant cells and the microenvironment, during the process named immune surveillance. Tumor infiltrating leukocytes have been shown to influence prognosis, benefit from treatments and metastatic spread in a variety of neoplastic diseases. Some of the elements from the immune environment are targets for immunotherapy that manipulates and orients the response towards an anti-tumor activity.
