Background: Whatsapp, launched in the year 2009, has exploded to 400 million active users each month. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of Whatsapp to enhance medical education in Indian medical school and also investigate the impact of Whatsapp messenger in their curriculum from the perspective of students. Materials and Methods: The study population included 100 students from the second phase of Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (SMMCHRI). An experimental study was planned by dividing them into two groups by simple random sampling. Experimental model (Study-group) were primed through Whatsapp before the session, while the comparison group (Control-group) comprised of 50 students, who were allowed to attend the lecture without prior exposure to the session. To assess the effect of Whatsapp intervention, a multiple choice post-test was conducted using 10 MCQs pertaining to the topic and a questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey assessing their perception was conducted among the Study-group students immediately after the session. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between Study-group and Control-group students with a p-value less than 0.001. Study-group perceived the new format to be effective than traditional format which was evident by the increase in Likert scale response values. Conclusion: Students are favorably inclined to use the Whatsapp and welcome its role in enhancing their learning experience. Since we observed that it was successful in providing an interactive environment during lecture, we propose that this methodology can be used to enhance students learning.

Background: The geriatric population is defined as the population aged 60 years and above. As the age advances, there is a high chance of having both physical and mental impairment. One of the important factors that influence the severity of disease among elderly is their health seeking behavior. Objective: To study the factors determining the health seeking behavior among elderly. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in field practice area of Father Muller Medical College. A sample size of 150 was chosen by purposive sampling method. A pretested questionnaire was used to collect the data. Statistical tests like Chi-square and regression analysis were used to find out the association. Results: Of the total participants 67.3% were in the age group of 60-70 years. The majority were illiterate. 65.3% were suffering from chronic illness. Hypertension was the commonest chronic disease. The majority of the people who had chronic disease visited health facility regularly to keep track of their condition. Age was the only demographic factor which was significantly associated with health seeking behavior for chronic illness in our study. Conclusion: Health seeking behaviour among elderly was better than the comparative studies may be because of better accessibility to health centers.

Background: Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement is a routine procedure in complete ophthalmologic examination and finds importance in diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. Goldmann applanation tonometry and non-contact tonometry, though age old, are still widely used methods of measuring IOP, especially in developing countries like India. This study was undertaken to compare IOP measured with Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT) and non-contact tonometer (NCT) and to determine the correlation between intraocular pressure and central corneal thickness (CCT). Methods: This was a cross sectional and observational study wherein adult patients visiting a medical hospital were included. IOP measurements of one hundred and forty four eyes (glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous) were performed using GAT and NCT. The IOP values were compared in different IOP ranges using Bland Altman graph. CCT was measured and its correlation with GAT and NCT analyzed using linear regression analysis. Results: Both methods of tonometry correlated significantly with each other. The mean of paired difference between GAT and NCT was 1.24±1.38 mmHg (r=0.95, p

Tarun Bali and Malhar N Kumar.
Subcutaneous zygomycosis due to Basidiobolus ranarum is endemic in India, especially in Southern India. This is a case report of animmunocompetent manual labourer who presented with a painless swelling overlying the left scapula. Preoperative imaging studies suggested the possibility of cavernous haemangioma. Excision biopsy was performed and gross as well as histopathological assessment showed it to be a fungal lesion (entomophthoromycosis). Culture of the affected tissue yielded B. ranarum. The patient was treated with potassium iodide and itraconazole and the lesion healed completely in 2 months.
