Risikofaktoren spielen eine wichtige Rolle in der Vorhersage und Prävention von psychischen Störungen. Klare und präzise Definitionen der Risikobegriffe sind Voraussetzung für die korrekte Interpretation und das Verständnis von Resultaten und damit auch für eine klare und präzise Kommunikation von Befunden über Risikofaktoren. Dies gilt sowohl in der Wissenschaft als auch in den Medien, gegenüber der Allgemeinbevölkerung wie auch den Patienten. Gleichwohl ist die Verwendung von unpräziser Sprache sogar im Bereich der Risikoforschung nicht selten und Begrifflichkeiten wie Risiko, Risikofaktoren und Ursachen werden inkonsistent gebraucht. Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, einen Überblick über zentrale Begriffe und Konzepte im Bereich der epidemiologischen Risikoforschung zu geben. Wir werden uns dafür vor allem auf die Definition von Kraemer et al. stützen.
