[Comment] Antenatal milk expression for women with diabetes in pregnancy

In The Lancet, Della Forster and colleagues1 present the findings from their randomised trial investigating the safety of antenatal breastmilk expression in women with diabetes in pregnancy (the Diabetes and Antenatal Milk Expression [DAME] trial). Antenatal milk expression has gained popularity despite little scientific study of its benefits or harms. As Forster and colleagues1 note, only two small pilot studies have been previously done,2,3 yet this nascent practice is commonly recommended by lactation consultants and others working in the lactation field.
