Audit of the rates of re-excision for close or involved margins in the management of oral cancer
The need for re-excision of close or involved margins after the resection of oral cancer is debatable. This audit comprised 640 consecutive patients over an 11-year period with at least five years' follow up. A total of 213 patients (33%) had resection margins that were clear (5 mm or more), 314 (49%) were close (1 - 4.9 mm), and 113 (18%) were involved (0 - 0.9 mm). Re-excision rates were 7 (2.2%) in the close and 12 (10.6%) in the involved groups. No re-excised close margins contained residual...

Plain radiographs for the assessment of coronectomy: not always a case of black or white
In recent years, coronectomy of impacted lower third molar teeth has become an increasingly popular alternative to removal. Traditionally, orthopantomograms of mandibular third molars have been used to indicate features that show that the tooth is in close proximity to, or in an intimate relation with, the inferior dental nerve. Some authors advocate coronectomy as opposed to surgical removal to reduce the risk of damage to the nerve. In our Trust during the last two years, there has been a noticeable...

Health-related quality of life in patients with T1N0 oral squamous cell carcinoma: selective neck dissection compared with wait and watch surveillance
Management of the neck in patients with clinical T1N0 oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is controversial. The aim of this study was to report the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a consecutive group of patients with stage 1 disease at a time closest to two years after primary surgery. Of 216 patients treated between 2007 and 2012 (after excluding early death and regional recurrence), 195 were eligible. HRQoL was measured using the University of Washington quality of life questionnaire version...

Oral squamous cell carcinoma arising in a patient with Werner syndrome
Werner syndrome (WS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by physical signs and symptoms, including premature aging and scleroderma-like skin changes. The gene responsible for WS is the WRN gene. A significant proportion of WS-related malignant tumours are non-epithelial types, and the incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is rare. A case of oral SCC of the lower alveolus and gingiva arising in a 63-year-old woman with WS is reported here. Biopsy confirmed moderately differentiated...

Comparison of clinical characteristics between burning mouth syndrome patients with bilateral and unilateral symptoms
The purpose of the present study was to investigate and compare the clinical characteristics of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients with bilateral and unilateral symptoms. Of 769 patients with oral burning sensation, 421 patients with primary BMS were included. Among them, 324 patients who complained of oral symptoms on both sides of the oral cavity were assigned to the bilateral group and 97 patients who complained of symptoms only on one side of the oral cavity were assigned to the unilateral...

Characterization of facial asymmetry in skeletal Class III malocclusion and its implications for treatment
Jaw deviation is frequently seen in Class III patients. The aim of the study was to investigate asymmetric features of skeletal, dental and soft tissues in three types of jaw asymmetry based on our previously reported classification system. The cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 70 Class III patients were analysed. Group 1 patients showed large shift of menton and synchronous but smaller ramus deviation. The maxillomandibular complex had roll and yaw rotations to the menton-deviation...

A novel 'surgeon-dominated' approach to the design of 3D-printed patient-specific surgical plates in mandibular reconstruction: a proof-of-concept study
Three-dimensionally (3D) printed patient-specific surgical plates have been proposed to facilitate mandibular reconstruction and are attracting extensive attention. We have recently reported the high accuracy of 3D-printed patient-specific surgical plates used in head and neck reconstruction. Based on this previous work, the current study proposes a novel 'surgeon-dominated' approach to the design of 3D-printed patient-specific surgical plates. The aim of this proof-of-concept study was to explore...

Maxillary molar root protrusion into the maxillary sinus: a comparison of cone beam computed tomography and panoramic findings
This study aimed to examine the prevalence of molar roots protruding into the maxillary sinus and to determine the panoramic radiographic signs as correlated with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT images of 354 roots were assessed and classified into three types, according to the relationship between the root and maxillary sinus. The prevalence of root protrusion into the maxillary sinus was calculated then the panoramic images assessed. After excluding some unidentified roots on the panoramic...

Do osteoconductive bone substitutes result in similar bone regeneration for maxillary sinus augmentation when compared to osteogenic and osteoinductive bone grafts? A systematic review and frequentist network meta-analysis
The purpose of this network meta-analysis was to identify the most effective biomaterials producing higher new bone formation (NBF) and lower residual graft (RG) and connective tissue (CT) following maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA), and to generate a ranking based on their performance. The MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published until March 2018, evaluating histomorphometric outcomes after MSA. Predictor variables were autogenous...

Predicting postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery
Publication date: Available online 21 June 2019Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryAuthor(s): D.M. Laskin, C.K. Carrico, J. WoodAbstractA common predictive measure of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is the Apfel score. Although tested in many different operations, it has not been tested extensively in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). This study was designed to determine whether it applied to OMFS and whether there were other factors in this population that...
