When Beppe Remuzzi, who directs the Mario Negri Laboratories in Bergamo, proposed that The Lancet might make a small contribution to healing the schism between science and the Catholic Church, you might imagine that this idea seemed ambitious beyond reason. And yet last week his vision was realised. Together with Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi (President of the Pontifical Council for Culture) and Tomasz Trafney (Head of the Vatican's Department of Science and Faith), we co-hosted a conference in Rome entitled, again perhaps overconfidently, The Future of Humanity Through the Lens of Medical Science.
