[Comment] Offline: Science and the defeat of fear

The antonym of trust is not distrust or mistrust. It is fear. And it is fear that shadows our societies today. Fear of terror. Fear of losing one's job. Fear of being poor. Fear of disease. Fear of the Other. It used to be the case that only tyrannies thrived on fear. Now it is democracies too. This pervasive feeling of fear suggests a sharp loss of trust in our culture, our institutions, even ourselves. Loss of trust—the fear that wraps itself around us as a sincere response to danger—partly explains Europe's fracture, America's retreat, and the riots and rebellions afflicting some of the most disfigured nation-states.
