Lung and upper aerodigestive malignancies are among the leading sites of new cancer cases and causes of cancer death worldwide [1,2]. Global incidence and mortality statistics from 2012 indicate that lung cancer accounted for approximately 1.8 million new cancer cases and 1.6 million cancer deaths, while squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN; larynx, pharynx, oral cavity and lip) accounted for nearly 686,000 new cases and 376,000 cancer deaths [3]. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) comprises 85% of all lung malignancies, and 20%-30% of these are squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) [4,5], while 95% of head and neck cancers are SCCHN [6].
