Protonic Conduction of Nanostructured Y-Doped BaZrO3

Nanostructured ionic conductors have recently attracted our attention due to the expectation that they may lead to new functionalities absent in microcrystalline conductors. In this study, nanostructured barium zirconate with perovskite crystal structure was prepared and its grain and grain boundary protonic conduction was investigated using ac impedance measurements as a function of temperature (RT ~ 400°C) and water partial pressure. The grain was highly conductive of protons, which is governed by the concentration of protonic defects at all temperatures. On the other hand, the grain boundary was not the preferred route for protonic conduction due to high resistance. However, enhanced protonic transport was observed at certain temperatures (
