It has been long recognized that the majority of cases of oral cancer are preceded by a premalignant state, which, at least in theory, can be easily accessible through clinical oral examination and accurately diagnosed by means of biopsy and histopathologic examination. In turn, early detection and adequate management and follow-up of such premalignant lesions provide a unique opportunity for successful secondary prevention of oral cancer, while avoidance or discontinuation of causative and predisposing factors can contribute to effective primary prevention.
