Prognostic impact of minimal pericardial effusion in patients with advanced non–small cell lung cancer

Minimal (<10 mm in thickness) pericardial effusion (PCE) can be incidentally detected by computed tomography at diagnosis in lung cancer patients. We retrospectively analyzed 428 patients diagnosed with advanced NSCLC. Our study found that 14.3% of patients presented with minimal PCE at first diagnosis, and its presence was an independent prognostic factor for reduced survival in patients with advanced NSCLC.
